Do we really need antibiotics during RCT?

Most of the patients when they come to our dental office for Root canal treatment, always have one common question “Don't we need antibiotics before starting a Root canal Treatment?”

In most of the cases when sterilization protocol is being properly followed along with proper isolation of the tooth undergoing treatment, you don’t need antibiotics for RCT.

There are very limited indications of Antibiotics in Root Canal Treatments:

  1. Immunocompromised person - People having a history of uncontrolled Diabetes mellitus, HIV, or other immunocompromised conditions need antibiotic coverage during the treatment.
  2. Abscess or Cyst – If the infection of the tooth has reached the adjacent soft tissue leading to swelling in the gums or face, it is suggested to have antibiotics during RCT.

We at Precious 32 Dental adhere to strict sterilization protocol and hardly we prescribe antibiotics for RCT to our patients.
