We encountered many patients who have chipped tooth for years but they didn’t know that can get it addressed in the simplest possible way. Before discussing the treatment options lets understand what causes this thing to happen.

CAUSES

  1. Road traffic accident
  2. Sports injury
  3. Biting on hard objects like opening bottles, popcorn kernels, bone chewing etc.
  4. Para functional Habits like clenching or night grinding.
  5. Medical reasons like Seizures/fits.
  6. Accidental hit by a person, wall or objects.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Depending on the extent of fracture line, treatment options are advised. The various treatment options are-

  • Polishing or rounding off the sharp margins: For small chips we may be able to polish and smooth the chip so that it blends in with your surrounding teeth.
  • Composite Restoration: We can restore the fractured or chipped fragment in one visit using tooth colored composite resin material so your tooth matches your other teeth.
  • Emax Veneers: Veneers are coverings that can hide most of the imperfections in your front teeth. You need veneer if you have a chipping that needs more extensive covering than you can get with composite restorations.
  • Crowns: Crowns are tooth-shaped caps that protect teeth which have experienced major fracture or chipping.
  • Root canal Treatment followed by crowns or veneers: Root canal treatment may be required if the fracture line has propagated deep into the tooth closer to the nerves. In such cases after root canal treatment, it is advisable to place crowns or Veneers.

DID YOU KNOW?

You can get your chipped portion re-fixed, if brought to your dentist at the earliest and in good condition. Clean your broken fragment with water or saline and keep your fragment either in saliva under your tongue or milk or saline or water at least. The fragment should be hydrated and it will be assessed by the dentist before its refixing.

After any form of treatment, a regular follow up and maintenance phase would be required.
